Rooftop Fall Protection Systems

Engineered Solutions for Complete Rooftop Safety and Hazard Prevention

Active and passive rooftop fall prevention systems: mobile anchor systems, warning lines, guardrails, walkways, and more

Protect the lives of the people who access your buildings with an array of fall prevention options.

Mobile Anchor Systems:

Mobile fall restraint/arrest mobile anchor systems are easily relocatable tie-off devices designed to safeguard workers at-height in construction areas or commercial rooftops. Unlike built-in anchor point rings that require regular inspection and certification, these fall restraint and mobile arrest anchors are OSHA compliant and low maintenance. These products meet OSHA requirements 1926.502(b) (15) and (16) and 1910.29(b).

These systems allow workers to move freely across the roof while staying safely tethered, preventing falls from unprotected edges or elevated surfaces. The portability of mobile anchors means they can be positioned exactly where needed, offering flexibility and continuous protection without compromising mobility.

W.W. Cannon offers several different models. Options include:

  • Penetrating and non-penetrating rooftop options
  • Protection for multiple workers – some in fall arrest and some in fall restraint
  • Compliant with most roofs
  • All products are OSHA compliant

Warning Line Systems:

Our rooftop warning line systems clearly define safe working zones and restricted areas, providing visual cues to keep workers out of hazardous zones. These systems are easy to install and reposition, offering flexibility in fall prevention on rooftops. Warning line systems, which go around the rooftop work area, provide a clear signal that workers are nearing a hazardous or unprotected side or edge. Along with defining where unsafe rooftop areas are, these warning lines can also alert workers to spots where they can work without safety nets, harnesses, or guardrails. OSHA Section 1926.501 defines warning line system requirements as follows: A warning line system needs to include a high-visibility material and have marks at 6-foot intervals. These features help workers clearly see the areas they need to keep a safe distance from.

Warning lines don’t provide any kind of physical restraint but rather serve as a visual reminder of unprotected rooftop areas. This definition means roof safety lines warn workers of areas where falling is a risk, but the system will not prevent them from falling. Therefore, roof warning line systems work best when they are part of a comprehensive fall protection system. For example, you can install roof guardrail systems for continuous fall protection closer to the roof edge.

Roof Guardrail (Handrail) Systems:

Crafted for ultimate reliability, roof guardrails are cutting-edge rooftop safety systems for workers navigating perilous rooftop perimeters. As the preferred method of safeguarding against the risk of falls, roof guardrail systems provide a protected pathway for roof access without needing specialized personal protective equipment, additional personnel or extensive training.

Options include internal wall mount, metal roof mount, external wall mount, non-penetrating, and perimeter clamp systems. Some of these systems can also be used for loading docks/pits and utility trench boxes.

Walkways:

Walkways are designed to offer a clear, designated path of access to avoid unintentional access to unsafe areas. They are ideal in combination with guardrail systems and are the preferred method of safe access across roofs and areas close to a fall edge.

We offer both non-penetrating and permanent walkways. Non-penetrating walkways for membrane, rubber, and bur roof systems can be installed quickly with cable ties. These systems are non-slip and withstand hurricane force winds. Permanent walkways are made of lightweight, noncorrosive aluminum. Fastening systems depend on the type of roof.

Walkway benefits include:

  • Protect your roof from foot traffic, which can cause early wear and uneven degradation
  • Make equipment easier to access and more likely to be maintained
  • Significantly increase safety because of their slip resistance, especially in wet or icy weather

Roof Access Hatches:

OSHA considers rooftop hatchways as holes that must be guarded to prevent people from falling into the hatch. W.W. Cannon offers two fully OSHA compliant (1926.502(b)(11) and 1926.502(b)(13)) hatch guarding solutions that are easy to set up and provides complete fall protection. Keep employees and contractors alike safe when on your roof.

  • Option 1: Non-penetrating, compression fit design that eliminates the chance of creating a leak in the roof or the hatch. They have a wide adjustment range in both length and width eliminating precise measuring. A three-sided guard rail and a spring loaded, self-closing gate are included. The gate automatically closes after the employee passes through, preventing them from falling through the guard rail opening.
  • Option 2: Secures to the roof from the base flange. There are five different sizes to choose from. Optional roof hatch guardrail can be added (compatible with most existing hatches), as well as a roof hatch hoist system that provides a safe, easy method for lifting items up to the rooftop.

Skylight Covers and Protection Systems:

Skylight covers are non-penetrating screens that secure to the curb of the skylight with a tight compression fit. They meet OSHA and CAL OSHA requirements 1926.501(b)(4) and CAL OSHA 3212(b) and (e). They allow significant light penetration and are galvanized for a long life. A wide range of sizes are available to accommodate the most popular skylight sizes, with custom sizes available. Skylight covers are a more cost-effective alternative to skylight protection systems.

Skylight protection systems excel in providing fall prevention for tall, pyramid-shaped skylights in addition to smoke hatches where the doors open to the roof in case of smoke or fire. They meet OSHA and CAL OSHA requirements 1926.501(b)(4) and CAL OSHA 3209(b). They fit many sizes of skylights out of the box, or, with easy cuts to the rails can be customized to fit many other sizes. Their free-standing, non-penetrating design prevents leaks and maintains your roof warranty.

At W.W. Cannon, we not only provide these rooftop fall protection systems, but we also handle the installation and ongoing service, giving you peace of mind that your facility is always secure.
