Power Management Company Ensures Roof Access Safety with Custom Stairs Designed with Catwalk

Recently, we had the privilege of working with a client who faced a significant safety challenge: accessing HVAC units on their roof. Their existing rooftop ladder posed numerous risks, prompting the need for a comprehensive, OSHA-rated solution . OSHA issued a new ruling in 2016 stating that “All fixed ladders (that extend more than 24 feet) installed on and after November 19, 2018, are equipped with a personal fall arrest system or a ladder safety system.” Please note that cages sold or installed after November 19, 2018, are no longer considered a form of fall protection. Cages installed before this date are still accepted as a form of protection until the final deadline comes into effect, which is November 28, 2036. As a company, W.W. Cannon is proactively informing companies of this change so that additional funds are not spent on systems that will eventually have to be replaced.

The Challenge: Enhancing Roof Access Safety

Our client’s primary objective was safety. They were using a non-OSHA-rated ladder, which was both unsafe and unreliable. They needed a secure way to allow their employees to access and service multiple HVAC units on the roof. One specific challenge was determining the best location for the stairs and railing to ensure it wouldn’t obstruct exits or docks.

Our Solution: Custom Roof Access Staircase and Catwalk

To address these concerns, we designed and installed a custom powder-coated steel roof access staircase with integrated railing, complimented by a 15-foot catwalk. The catwalk was a crucial component, extending 15 feet from the roof’s edge. This design ensured that employees could perform their tasks without ever approaching the edge, significantly reducing the risk of falls and enhancing overall safety.

The staircase and railing not only met OSHA ladder safety standards but also provided a superior alternative to a traditional rooftop ladder. Offering enhanced stability and security without the need for any concrete work – we simply bolted it to the ground – made this solution both effective and efficient.

The Turnkey Advantage

What sets W.W. Cannon apart is our ability to provide full turnkey solutions. From the initial consultation to design, manufacturing, and installation, we manage the entire project. Our client found this comprehensive approach particularly appealing, as it ensured a seamless and hassle-free experience.

Addressing Customer Concerns

During the sales process, our client expressed several concerns, including the staircase location and budget constraints. Instead of quoting an aluminum or galvanized stair, we offered a more competitively priced powder-coated steel stair, which met their safety and financial requirements.

Post-Installation Success

Since the installation, the client has been using the new access system regularly to service their HVAC units. The new steps with platform and railing have effectively addressed their safety concerns and provided them with peace of mind knowing their employees can work safely and efficiently. Knowing that their employees can now access HVAC units safely and efficiently provides them with peace of mind and reinforces their commitment to workplace safety.
