Custom VRC Installation Delivers Safety and Efficiency for Oklahoma Client

WW Cannon recently completed a Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor (VRC) installation for a client in Oklahoma – providing a heavy-duty, user-friendly material lift solution that addressed both capacity and safety concerns.

What is a vertical reciprocating conveyor (VRC)?

  • Vertical reciprocating conveyors are essentially a horizontal conveyor rotated to operate vertically, allowing it to safely and economically transport goods and products between different levels.
  • VRCs are not elevators; they’re an entirely different category of equipment.
  • VRC’s are a “no rider” lift, meaning these lifts are specifically designed to transport materials – not people.

Project Scope:

The client needed a more robust system that could transport carts, pallets, and other materials from the ground level to the mezzanine in a Z-configuration. Their existing Autoquip VRC’s lacked the necessary durability and safety features that were required to operate safely and efficiently.

Our Safety and Functionality Solutions:

To resolve these issues, W.W. Cannon recommended installing a 5,000-pound capacity VRC with full caging for enhanced safety. The powered gates, which open at the push of a button, were an essential feature that set this installation apart, as other systems typically lack this convenience. We customized the installation with concrete modifications, cutting a pit to ensure the carriage sat flush with the ground, allowing carts to roll directly onto it.

One of the key challenges was ensuring the gates did not swing into the aisle where forklifts were in use, posing a safety hazard. We solved this by designing vertically opening gates to eliminate any potential obstructions.

Customization and Execution:

In addition to installing the PFlow VRC, we extended the client’s mezzanine to connect directly with the VRC carriage, ensuring smooth transitions for material handling without gaps or obstacles. The client expressed satisfaction with the system’s performance and has since ordered a second VRC.

Next Steps:

WW Cannon’s ability to customize the VRC to exact specifications, combined with our in-house installation and maintenance services, solidified the client’s decision to choose us over in-state competitors. We provided a cost-effective solution while ensuring long-term support, including repairs and annual inspections.
