Continuous Stock Rotation, High-Density Storage, and Efficient Order Picking with Pallet Flow Rack
Pallet flow rack, also known as gravity flow rack, is a dynamic storage system that utilizes inclined rollers or wheels to facilitate the movement of pallets from the loading end to the unloading end. It operates on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis, allowing for efficient stock rotation.
Flow rack for pallet storage consists of selective rack integrated with gravity flow rails, or rollers. Flow rails decline from the loading side of the pallet rack to the unloading side of the pallet rack. Pallets move along the inclined lanes under the force of gravity, ensuring automatic flow toward the picking end. The pitch can be changed to provide a gentile flow that will not damage the product. Flow rails, or rollers, guide and support the pallets as they move through the system. As one load is removed from the unloading side of the pallet flow rack, the next load flows down into the unloading position. With the addition of a gravity flow speed controller, the speed of the pallet as it moves down the flow rails can be controlled.
Lane configurations are typically designed with multiple lanes to accommodate different products or SKUs.
More complex systems, such as Pick Modules, can flow pallets automatically to a carton flow system so pallets can be broken down for split-case picking.
Common Applications
- Perishable Goods Storage – because the FIFO inventory management system ensures older stock is used first, this system is ideal for facilities storing perishable items with short shelf lives.
- High-Density Storage – highly efficient system when maximizing storage density is one of your top requirements, especially if your facility hands a large volume of homogeneous products.
- Order Picking Efficiency – ideal for order picking operations where a continuous flow of products is required for streamlined order fulfillment.
- Manufacturing Operations – promotes efficient material handling and is perfect for storing raw materials or components in a production environment.
- Automated Systems Integration – integrate pallet flow racks into automated systems for enhanced efficiency in high throughput environments.
